For this purpose a virtual laboratory is built. The CoVASE technology is used for the development of this virtual laboratory. This virtual lab will teach the trainee science teachers how to take safety measures and how to improve their health by interacting with them through 3D visualization. It will develop a simulated atmosphere of real world incidents in a science laboratory for the trainee teachers. The trainees were given full control on the system and their responses and activities we re recorded. The trainees shared their experiences on virtual simulated environment that it was very interesting, informative and motivating for all of them. The trainees can get the required information about the training without any cost incurred. It does not require any additional expense to gain experience from virtual world and interactive simulations. A strong maternal bond is crucial in oneââ¬â¢s life; however in both Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong and Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, the authors portray the distant relationship between the mother and the daughter as a tool to critique the ââ¬Ëinhumanââ¬â¢ traditions imposed upon the family members in their respective societies. Though Houngââ¬â¢s and Esquivelââ¬â¢s novels are set in Vietnam and Mexico respectively, they assert that family traditions are unjust and forbid family members to pursue their own dreams, ambitions, and desires as portrayed by the two teenage protagonists and their mothers, who are obligated to sacrifice their own lives for others. In order to gain their freedom, the protagonists have to detach themselves from their oppressive, domineering mothers to break away from the undesirable family traditions in their culture. Early in Like Water for Chocolate, the reader is introduced to the abnormal mother-daughter relationship right away as Nacha, the family cook, ââ¬Å"offers to take charge of feeding Titaâ⬠(Esquivel 6) after Mama Elenaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"milk dried up from the shockâ⬠(Esquivel 6) of her husbandââ¬â¢s death. Moreover, Mama Elena arranges a marriage for Rosaura, Titaââ¬â¢s sister, to marry Titaââ¬â¢s true love Pedro, which develops Titaââ¬â¢s abhorrence towards her mother significantly. Titaââ¬â¢s hatred towards her mother is mostly due to the fact that she is prohibited from marrying under the tradition that the youngest daughter has to take care of her mother until she passes away; therefore, resulting in a widening gap between the two. Portraying Titaââ¬â¢s domain and realm as the kitchen underscores Esquivelââ¬â¢s complete condemnation of family traditions as she is ordered to cook in the kitchen at all times, preparing meals for he... ... family traditions because they are innocent and fragile compared to men, therefore dramatizing the effects of the ââ¬Ëinhumanââ¬â¢ traditions. A maternal bond is a very crucial component of oneââ¬â¢s life; therefore by disrupting the usual aspect of oneââ¬â¢s life, the authors are sending their message in a strong manner. Furthermore, the ending of both novels imply a necessity for social improvement in their societies as the protagonists have to detach themselves from their repressive mothers, who represent the authorities of the old generation with their overbearing attitudes, in order to pursue their own dreams, whether it is for education, career, or love. After the protagonists break away from their mothers, Tita chases her love for Pedro and Hang leaves the country, abandoning all the traditional traditions, to continue with her college education and occupation in Russia.

Word 2007 Introduction
First, we'll take you through the Microsoft Office Button, he Quick Access Toolbar, Ribbons, Tabs and Groups ââ¬â to familiarize you with these common features. Then we'll show you some of the unique Ribbons, Tabs and Groups of each application. If you have 2007 Office installed on your computer here are a couple of hints on how we'll proceed. To open an application, Double click quickly on the application icon (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. ) on the Windows desktop. Or, click the Start button, in the lower left corner of the screen, then click All Programs, move the cursor over Microsoft Office and select the application you desire.In this tutorial, when we indicate that you need to click a mouse button, it will mean to click the left mouse button ââ¬â unless we indicate that you should click the right mouse button. So, always move the cursor over the ââ¬Å"placeâ⬠we indicate and ââ¬Å"click leftâ⬠unless we tell you otherwise. The Microsoft Office Button We'll use Microsoft Word 2007 for our initial illustrations of Ribbon, Tab and Group examples. The first thing you'll notice, when you open a 2007 Office application is that there is no longer a File choice in the Menu Bar.The arrow above points to the Microsoft Office Button ââ¬â which replaces File. As you move your cursor over the ight) will appear. Click the Microsoft Office button. Microsott Ottlce Button a preview image (image on When you click the Microsoft Office button, it will turn orange and a ââ¬Å"File likeâ⬠menu will appear (similar to the image on the right). You'll notice that you now have little images for choices and that some of them have little arrows pointing to the right. These arrows indicate that there are additional choices for a selection.We'll show you one of these on the next page. On the right side of the Microsoft Office Button menu screen you will see your most recently used files ââ¬â Recent Documents (see arrow above on right). Each Microsof t Office Button menu is tailored to its Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc). Move your cursor over the arrow to the right ot the Print button (1 ),a menu ot print choices will appear on the right ââ¬â under Preview and print the document ( 2. ) (image on right). Click Print ( 3. ) at the top of the Menu. A standard Print Menu screen will appear.It is suggested that you spend a few minutes clicking the various choices in the Microsoft Office Button menu screen to familiarize yourself with what they do. If you look at the bottom of the Microsoft Office Button menu screen you will see two uttons. Since we're using Word, the buttons indicate Word Options and Exit Word. The buttons change with each application (e. g. PowerPoint will indicate PowerPoint Options). When you click the Word Options button the image below will appear. Notice, on the left side of the menu screen there are a number of choices (e. g. Personalize, Display, Proofing, etc. . when you click a choice on the left side of the screen, the options for that choice appear on the right. Take a few minutes and move through these choices to familiarize yourself with this menu screen. You will see that Microsoft has placed lot of resources that were under File-Tools-options, in previous versions of Office, in this menu. The last choice ââ¬â Resources ââ¬â furnishes a lot of online resources for the application which you are using. We click ed the Microsott Word Resources text lin an image below appeared. Notice all of the useful online resources available to you.Quick Access Toolbar In the upper left corner ââ¬â to the right of the Microsoft Office Button ââ¬â you will see an area called the Quick Access Toolbar (image on left). This area is quite handy as it currently contains several of the most used buttons in Office applications ââ¬â Save, Undo, Redo, Print and Print Preview. You can customize this toolbar by adding and removing as many Quick Access button choices as you desire. In the Quick Access Toolbar (on the left) you can see we added the Insert Picture button ââ¬â since we are using it a lot for this tutorial.To add this button to the toolbar we first clicked the Insert Tab and then RIGHT clicked the Insert Picture button. One of the choices was Add to Quick Access Toolbar. When we clicked this choice the Insert Picture button was added. You can add any button you choose by doing this. To remove buttons from the Quick Access Toolbar Just RIGHT click on the button you esire to remove and choose Remove from Quick Access Toolbar. Ribbons This is the new term you hear a lot about in 2007 Office. Ribbons stretch across the top of your application screen with features to assist you as you click the Ribbon Tabs.To us, Tabs and Ribbons are the same. It like unreeling holiday ribbon from a spool and seeing new images on the ribbon ââ¬â very cool! So, we'll cover Tabs/Ribbons in great detail. Tabs Below the Microsoft Office Button and Q uick Access Toolbar we see a series of Tabs/ Ribbons. Tabs are similar to the Drop Down Menu choices in previous versions of Office. The Tabs are, logically, a bit different for each 2007 Office application to assist you with the most common features of that application. All the 2007 Office applications begin with the Home tab.The Home Tab/Ribbon tor Word 2007 looks like the image below. The Home Tab/Ribbon for PowerPoint 2007 looks like the image below. The Home Tab/Ribbon for Excel 2007 looks like the Image below. The Home Tab/Ribbon for Access 2007 looks like the Image below. You'll quickly notice that the Home Tab/Ribbon for each application shows the Clipboard as the left ââ¬Å"Groupâ⬠(except in Access) In Word and Excel, the Font Tab/ Ribbon is to the right, but in PowerPoint, because working with slides is paramount, the Slides Tab/Ribbon comes next.If you have 2007 Office installed on your computer, open these four applications and take a few minutes looking at each a pplication's Home Tab/Ribbon. Notice, the Tabs to the right of the Home Tab/Ribbon are tailored to each application. We'll work a bit with this in a little while. Groups In the image below, the arrows point to a new topic ââ¬â Groups. Clipboard Editing Font Paragraph Styles Clipboard Group The Tab/Ribbon bar images (in this tutorial) are hard to read, so we've placed arrows in the image above) tor the Groups in the Word Home Tab/Ribbon.Again, the Tabs/ Ribbons, and Groups,will vary depending on the application you're using. Let's look a bit at the Groups in Word. The first Group on the Word Home Tab is Clipboard. To open a Group you move your cursor over the little down pointing arrow in the lower right corner of a group. This arrow is enlarged in the image below. When you click this arrow the image on the right appears. Notice that the Clipboard appears on the left side of your screen and shows any text or images youVe copied. To close this group, click the ââ¬Å"Xâ⬠in t he upper right corner of the Group.Notice, in the Font Group area (above), you have the most used Font features. However, if you desire all of the font features, Just click the Open Group arrow to the right of Font. An old friend ââ¬â the Font menu screen appears (when you click the Open Group arrow). You'll see this a lot as your learn more about 2007 Office. Many of the ââ¬Å"tried and trueâ⬠menu screens will appear in logical places. Select Text Mini Toolbar When you're working with text and fonts a really ingenious ââ¬Å"new thingâ⬠occurs as you highlight text ââ¬â a Select Text Mini Toolbar appears!In the image on the right we highlighted ââ¬â Highlight Text. When we paused the cursor over the highlight, a ââ¬Å"shadow likeâ⬠toolbar appeared. When we move our cursor over the toolbar, it is ready for us to use it to modify our text. The tlrst time you Notice in the Paragraph Group area (left) you again have the most used Paragraph features.However, if you desire all of the paragraph features, Just click the Open Group arrow to the right of Paragraph. You should now have a ââ¬Å"feelâ⬠for how the Tabs/ Ribbons and Groups work together to assist you. Hang on! The next Group on the Word Home Tab/Ribbon is Styles. If you go back to Page 6 and glance at the Word, PowerPoint and Excel Home Tabs, you'll see that the right portion of a Tab is where the application selections change to fit the application.In Word you can now select a style from the Styles Group (image below). If you click the More arrow in the lower right corner of the Styles group, you will see additional choices. When you click the More arrow you will see an image similar to the one below. Notice that we are in Times New Roman ââ¬â Normal. On the next page we'll show you one of the really, really neat new features in 2007 Office. Fasten your seatbelts! We're going to highlight this paragraph (when we have finished typing it). Then we're going to open the Styles Group.When the Group is open we'll move our cursor over the choices, and as we do, you'll see, in the images below, that the entire paragraph changes to that Style! We selected Sty Look le. And anotherâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦ Other Tabs/Ribbons ââ¬â the text now appears! When you move to the other Tabs/Ribbons, you'll notice that they contain their own Groups ââ¬â associated with that Tab. The Insert Tab/Ribbon (below) has logical ââ¬Å"thingsâ⬠that you would insert into a document ââ¬â Shapes, Pages, Tables, Illustrations, Links, Headers/Footers, Text and Symbols.Again, depending on your choices, many selections allow you to ââ¬Å"preview' what youVe highlighted ââ¬â similar to the two illustrations above. It is suggested t hat you click the Tabs/Ribbons in each application you'll be using to get a ââ¬Å"feelâ⬠for them. The Page Layout Tab/Ribbon also has logical selections ââ¬â Themes, Page Setup, Page Background, Paragraph and Arrange. The References Tab/Ribbon will really come in handy for those publishing long documents, articles or books ââ¬â Table of Contents, Footnotes, Citations & Bibliography, Captions, Index, and Table of Authorities.The Mailings Tab/Ribbon lets you work with Envelops, Labels, Mail Merge, Fields and Preview. It includes Create, Start Mail Merge, Write and Insert Fields, Preview Results and Finish. The Review Tab/Ribbon has the Proofing Tools, Comments, Tracking, Changes, Compare and Protect features. The View Tab [Ribbon allows you to change the document Views, do now ide, Zoom and arrange your Windows. This gives you a ââ¬Å"feelâ⬠for how the Tabs/Ribbons work in Word 2007. He desperately needs companionship and equality. He has the intelligence of any of the workers, but they dont listen to him because he is black. Crooks is a very lonely and bitter man who has got a crooked back where a horse kicked him, (Hence his name) His eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity. His face was very lean and lined with deep black wrinkles. His lips were lighter than his face. Crooks is the stable Buck on the ranch, he usually keeps to himself out in the barn. Being black makes life for Crooks extremely strenuous, He lived in California as a child and has felt the pains of racism his entire life. Although he did play with other white boys as a child, society soon cast him aside. His name is the first sign that Crooks will be portrayed as an outsider, as Crooks is not a real name. This shows us that the other farm workers have given him this name as a nickname to give him an inferior status, and to cast him out of their group.In the 30s when the book was written black, Afro-Americans were seen as outcasts and lesses humans that whites. Steinbeck, who, when he wrote the book, lived in a very unsympathetic society, used the book to bring about his doubts, concerning the views of his piers. The society in which Steinbeck lived was such that nigros were treated as animals and little more, he tries to portray this in the way that Crooks is treated in the novel, Stable Buck-ooh, Sta-able buck! and then: Where the hell is that god-damn nigger?This effectively shows how Steinbeck attempts to display how his society treats those that I see as being inferior to them as they would do animals. In the novel Crooks lives in the Stable next to where the horses are kept, this is a physical reminder of his position on the ranch, the way that his home is physically far from that of the others, and that it is such deterioration in standards. Crookss quarters are smelly and dirty, again reinforcing his inferiority to the others.In his stable he also has a collection of commodities that would not normally be associated with a ranch laborer, in the plot it is indicated that he intends to stay on the farm due to his crooked back, and not move to a new ranch when work there is completed a s George and Lennie do. This is a method used by Steinbeck to isolate Crooks from the other workers. As is the way in witch he is given a different job than George and Lennie, as a disabled worker he can only complete menial tasks such as looking after the horses, degrading his usefulness and thus pushing him away even further.Although Jane Eyre is as much an outsider in her society as Crooks is in his, they are in completely different circumstances, but as with of mice and Men Jane Eyre is treated as an inferior person, but for different reasons. Jane was orphaned as a young girl and as such was sent off to live with her aunt at Gateshead Hall, where in her own words, was at a discord at Gateshead hall: I was like nobody there; I had nothing in harmony with Mrs. Reed, or her children, or her chosen vassalage. This bad temperament as portrayed by Bronte is a device to isolate Jane from the rest of the family by using her opposing views and unwillingness to play or converse in a reas oned discussion with the Reed children. This is amplified when she is not allowed to play with the Reed childrens toys even when she wants to, just as Crooks is not allowed to sleep in the bunk house. Janes attitude right from the beginning of the novel when Bronte pictures her refusing to go on the walk and again disrupting the harmony of the family.Bronte uses Jane as Steinbeck used of Mice and Men, to give the public their view on how outsiders were treated, however rather than racism, Bronte, who herself had to publish under a false name to avoid the stigma of her society, tackles sexism and the class system. Jane who comes from a fairly habitual background, and being female has to suffer the same stigmata that her author did, this pushes her to the edge of her social order.The way that Jane has changed from a bleak Landscape to the relative comfort of an upper class mansion, focuss her isolation when she looks back on her past as she looks out to the desolate past that is the f rosty garden. Also the Language that Bronte gives Jane to use such as What does Bessie say I have done? and what do you want, Mr. Reed, I said with awkward defiance, Is very composite for a young girl.It is also very defiant to speak to those that have taken her in such a manner, constructing a feeling of seclusion around her yet again, reinforced by her preferring to read alone in the study behind the curtain as she looks out to her past, and future, bleakness. Both Bronte and Steinbeck use the stigmas of their time to great effect in the respective novel to create the desired isolation of their characters. What they have in common is their desire to break these stigmata, Steinbeck the cruelty of racism in the southern states and Bronte the constraints of sexism in the upper echelons of society.

Nokia is increasingly recognised as one of the biggest success stories of the modern world, successfully coping with being in the middle of some of the most wide scale changes seen in the last twenty years. Indeed, until 1992, Nokiaââ¬â¢s products were almost uniformly low tech and purely functional, mainly consisting of toilet paper, nappies, car tyres and rubber boots; and cables for electric and telephone utilities. The company, based in Finland, had its major market in the Soviet Union up until its collapse in 1991/92. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which was Finlandââ¬â¢s main trading partner, Nokia almost went into bankruptcy due to falling demand. Some of the companyââ¬â¢s shareholders tried to sell Nokia to Ericsson at this point, but Ericsson refused to buy what they saw as a company on the brink of collapse and impossible to rescue (Fox, 2000). However by May 2001, Nokia had become the worldââ¬â¢s largest manufacturer of mobile phones by a long way, with 35% of the global market share, compared to 13% for Motorola, and was second in the world in the equipment used to run mobile networks. Business Weekââ¬â¢s (2001) ranking of the worldââ¬â¢s largest companies showed that Nokia had the fifth most valuable brand on earth in the year 2000, and the companyââ¬â¢s stock market value was approximately $250 billion: the second highest in Europe, and ninth in the world. This dramatic turnaround has largely been attributed to one of the most well publicised critical factors in the modern business environment: dynamic leadership (Kanji, 2005). Following poor performance from several CEOs, Nokia appointed Jorma Olilla, described as a ââ¬Å"charismatic, charming entrepreneurâ⬠(Abetti, 2000), as new CEO in 1992. Olilla had previously been in charge of the companyââ¬â¢s mobile phone business in 1990, and had successfully turned it into a global force, leading to his appointment as CEO. He revolutionised the companyââ¬â¢s strategy, claiming that, as the Scandinavian nations, had a very low population density, but high standards of living compared to much of the world, their communication preferences and tastes were significantly ahead of the rest of the world. As a result, he concluded that mobile phones would both appeal to the younger generation, who were always on the move, and in doing so would gradually replace land line phones. As a result, whilst Motorola, one of Nokiaââ¬â¢s biggest competitors at the time, was targeting principally business, government and industry (Abetti, 2000), Nokia decided to target individual consumers. The company exploited the wealth of the Scandinavian nations by competing on quality, brand and fashion; rather than on price. Olilla also recognised that Nokia was highly technically competent, with a strong internal culture and focus (Fox, 2000); another two of the critical factors for success in the modern business environment. From this base, he saw the need for the company to embrace a third critical factor: technological innovation, and used this to drive the focus of the corporation away from mere technical RD and on to a more innovative and creative corporate strategy Another strategic decision was to diversify away from being purely reliant on the GSH digital standard, and to embrace the other two standards: TDMA in North America, and PDS in Japan (Pulkkinen 1997). This market diversification, another critical factor for success, enabled Nokia to dominate in many markets, whilst maintaining brand integrity and a consistent look and feel for the phones. Indeed, embracing the trend towards user friendliness, Nokia included a software based menu, making their mobile phones similar to a palmtop computer and thus adding extra functionality for users. However, whilst Nokia recognised the need for diversification, it also recognised the need for a strong strategic focus, which is another critical success factor. Indeed, shortly after Olilla became CEO, all the companies vice-presidents but one left the company, Nokia closed down all of its unprofitable non-electronic businesses, and the companyââ¬â¢s management was reformed into a new five person executive team, all of whom were young and ready to embrace the new market challenges. Due to this strong strategic focus, Nokiaââ¬â¢s diversification into electronics and mobile phones became the core competency for the entire company, leading to Nokia becoming the world leader in wireless communication. The results can be seen in the fact that the sales goal for Nokiaââ¬â¢s first series of phones was 2,000 units, when in fact the company sold over 20 million of these phones worldwide (Abetti, 2000). The Nokia case covers the vast majority of the critical success factors companies require to succeed in the modern business environment. Indeed, so prevalent are these factors that they can also be seen in the case of Rolls Royceââ¬â¢s success over the past few years. Similar to Nokia, Rolls-Royce focuses strongly on technology and innovation however, in contrast to many modern global companies, Rolls Royce maintains a significant manufacturing base in the UK, where it manufactures value added components Rather than looking to outsource manufacturing overseas to a country where manufacturing cheaper, as many major companies have, Rolls Royce has used the UKââ¬â¢s sound technological base and excellent infrastructure to great advantage. The company has build focused factories with a very good lean flow of information, the minimum amount of waste, well designed processes and modern working practices, such as self directed teamwork (Sandford, 2004). This comprehensive and holistic approach to operational excellence and total quality management, two critical factors for many manufacturing firms, has led to Rolls Royceââ¬â¢s productivity being equal or better than any of its competitors. Similar to Nokia, Rolls Royce has a strong strategic focus, however in contrast to the mobile phone giant, Rolls Royce has kept its overall strategy remarkably constant over the years, and this constancy of purpose has been a great help to the company when developing and consolidating its operational strategy (Interavia, 2001). This constancy of purpose and strategy has also enable Rolls Royce to learn from its factories, its people and its processes, and such organisational learning is vital in helping the company develop better products for future growth. Indeed, Rolls Royce has remained very strong in developing and maintaining its internal resources and core competencies, which are also seen as key strategic factors in the modern business environment (Barney, 1996). Rolls Royce have recognised that, whilst short term cost savings may not be as great; ultimately, outsourcing core activities such as manufacturing will result in both product innovation and long term competitive advantage suffering. In fact, Mesinger (2007) discovered that when technology and cost considerations replace the role of skilled people in the performance of many routine jobs, creativity and innovation thinking among employees is affected across the board. As such, with creativity and innovation being considered critical factors in modern organisational success, Meisinger suggests that companies will need to develop strategies specifically to enhance the creative environment of the workplace. A further critical factor in global business success, and one that is often viewed as a separate consideration, is the use of the Internet for sales, marketing and communications. Whilst some academics argue that the Internet should be considered a separate business unit, Chaffey et al (2000) claim that a companyââ¬â¢s Internet strategy is an integral part of its overall strategy, as the Internet, if used properly, will supports the main thrusts of the companyââ¬â¢s marketing and business strategy. Indeed, modern researchers and practitioners now increasingly view a companyââ¬â¢s marketing strategy, and the related factors, as critical factors in business success (Porter, 2001). One final factor that is viewed by many practitioners as being critical in the modern environment is successfully managing the knowledge that is accumulated within business organisations. This has led to the rise in knowledge management as a critical and differentiating factor for any business that relies on the skill of its people. Lee and Asllani (1997) cite several examples that demonstrate how knowledge management enables companies to achieve both continuous and radical improvements, and that these two approaches can significantly increase the firmââ¬â¢s competitive advantage. Indeed, many researchers have recognised the importance of knowledge management in the implementing the improvement philosophies involved in lean manufacturing and total quality management (Yang, 2004) and now see the interaction between the two concepts as being a critical factor for success in itself. Zetie (2002) showed that the concepts of total quality management and knowledge management, together w ith a number of others, are becoming ever more closely linked, and are actually all leading towards better organisational learning and development. If this conclusion is valid, then a key question follows -- Why are so many universities producing mediocre writers, considering that an individual who writes effectively will stand out in the work force? This question has been the subject of a long debate focusing not only on the importance of writing but the method needed to implement a solution. There are numerous concerns about student writing, and therefore many people have turned to different areas of education for the answer to improving studentsââ¬â¢ writing. One question, which deals with this subject is, ââ¬Å"How do American students compare with international students, and are there any differences in the educational systems with respect to writing emphasis?â⬠Th is ââ¬Å"International Perspective,â⬠the topic of this paper, is a comparison among cultures, students, schools, and their writing. There are hundreds of countries in the world, each with their own educational system in place. Although most countries view writing as a necessity for students, only a handful have begun the initiative of requiring writing in a university setting. Therefore, this paper will compare writing characteristics of countries with similar economic and cultural positions as the United States, including Canada, Britain, and Australia. Furthermore, this paper will identify the degree to which writing plays a role in each countries educational system and will develop an understanding of how countries view writing as a method to adequately prepare graduates for the business world. Summary: There are many studies around the world, comparing the writing abilities of high school students among countries. In many cases, the United States continuously ranks far below its competitors, including the most recent rankings presented in 2002 by the U.N. Childrenââ¬â¢s Fund (UNICEF), who has ranked the United States 18th out of 24 countries when comparing the percent of 15 year-olds falling below key educational benchmarks; Canada, Australia, and Britain all ranked in the top 7 (CNN.com). During the 1999-2000 school year, American students tested in grades 4, 8, and 12 scored below minimum criteria set by the National Assessment and Governing Board. This board outlines the essential basic skills deemed minimal to meet academic standards, including writing proficiency. It was found that students who learned certain forms of writing, such as ââ¬Å"process writing,â⬠performed better on the exam, since they were taught how to analyze their ideas (Nations Report).

What I Most Appreicate About My Grandmother

Whatever the case be, always appreciate the better things in life. So always keep a good mind setting and a positive attitude. There are a lot of things that people fail to realize that are most appreciative. What I most appreciate about my grandmother is how much she entertains, motivates and supports her family. At times my granny can be entertaining to me. She loves to tell stories to us about how she grew up in the south.She also has a temper so sometimes when someone says or does something she doesnââ¬â¢t like she will snap out on them. Itââ¬â¢s only funny to me when Iââ¬â¢m not the one getting grilled. In addition, to that she will sit and lecture anybody about whatever, so donââ¬â¢t do or say anything that will set her off. When she gets to talking it is too late to turn around and walk away because she will go on and on about it until she proves her point. Regardless of her snapping and lectures granny can be a loving and caring person. She loves church and is in the choir on Sundays.Everyone at her church loves to her sing solo, so she walks around the house and practicing her songs. I love how entertaining she can be, so anyone in need of some entertainment just comes to grannies house its always live. As kind-hearted as my granny is, she also has the quality of being a motivator. Throughout my life she always motivated me to do well in school and pushed me to be the best I can be. She always told me to ââ¬Å"Leave those boys alone and get your education!! â⬠. Even though I didnââ¬â¢t listen, I still kept that in mind and still received my diploma and now enrolled in college.I love it when she tells everyone at her church how proud she is of me. She lets everyone know that I made the Deanââ¬â¢s list while I was in high school. However, I believe that when she is gone , Iââ¬â¢m going to be the one that motivates everyone in the family, because my granny has taught me a lot and made me the smart, beautiful young lady that I am today. I know deep down inside she wants all her grandchildren to be successful in life. Even though she doesnââ¬â¢t tell us, she wants to proud of all of us since her children are all grown up.From the love and the care of my granny, to the helping hand that will remain grateful, and the motivation she gives me, I truly love Canzinetta Webb and believe she is one of the best things that ever happen to me. My family and my granny are equally important to me but my granny is like the back bone of our family. Although Iââ¬â¢m her grandchild she took me into her home as if I was her own. For this reason, I love her so much, because she didnââ¬â¢t want to see me go into foster care. She works hard to provide for me and my family. Thereââ¬â¢s always food on the table and clothes on our backs.Obviously, my granny is the back bone of our family because every Sunday my granny cooks a big dinner and all my family comes to our house to eat. So when everyone leaves they will be leaving with a smile and a full stomach, maybe even a plate to-go. Yet, she supports her family however, whenever help is needed she is always been there for whoever family or not. Necklace by Guy de Maupassant Essay
The ââ¬Å"Necklaceâ⬠by Guy de Maupassant, is a story about a beautiful girl, named Mathilde Loisel who was born into an unfavorable family. She then got married, Monsieur Loisel who is a common clerk, who can only provide her with little things. Unhappy with her circumstances, Mme Loisel always felt beneath herself. So to become the person she wanted to be she borrowed a friends necklace for a party, she lost it, and then had to do everything she could to pay off the debt made from the replacement necklace. Maupassant shows that she had gotten exactly what she deserves for her vanity and pride. She not only was punished, but her husbandââ¬â¢s life was also affected. Since Mme Loisel had believed that because of her beauty she deserved to be of higher class that what she was in. She claims she had ââ¬Å"suffered endlesslyâ⬠because she felt as though she was entitled to ââ¬Å"delicacy and luxuryâ⬠. Maupassant is showing his reader how conceited Mme Loisel was being. Instead of being happy that she live in comfort, Mme Loisel dreamed of more. She dreamed of ââ¬Å" delicate mealsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"marvelous dishesâ⬠things that she believed she deserved just because of her beauty. Trying to make his wife happy Monsieur Loisel came home with an invitation to a party. Instead of being happy ââ¬Å"she flung the invitationâ⬠and ââ¬Å"was beginning to cry. The was another example, given by Maupassant, showing Mme Loiselââ¬â¢s vanity, and how much she hated that fact that she couldnââ¬â¢t afford dresses to match her beauty. Her husband, however still tries to please her by giving her money to buy a beautiful dress. However this was still not enough because she now needed jewelry to match. Thus showing more of how she thought highly of herself just because of beauty and wanted more to mach it. She borrowed her friends necklace, and unfortunately lost it on the way home. She bought a replacement and it caused her and her husband to be in debt. She began to do ââ¬Å"the heavy work of the houseâ⬠and ten years went by and she began to look old and became like all other poor women. Maupassant showed his readers Mme Loiselââ¬â¢s karma for her wanting so much of what she cannot have. Then what made matters worse, she found out that the necklace she borrowed was fake and was worth a lot less than the replacement. This was Maupassantââ¬â¢s way to punish the conceited girl. Now she is no longer the beautiful girl she once was and she now lives in poverty. This was the best way to punish Mme Loisel. Unfortunately her husband suffered too. Her husband also was punished, mainly because instead of telling his wife she should just tell her friend what happened, he told her to buy time by saying theyââ¬â¢re getting it fixed. His punishment was using the money left from his father, and ââ¬Å"risked his signatureâ⬠by borrowing money from different people. He now had to let go of their servant, changed their flat, because now they had work to pay off the debt, and in the process they fell into more debt. The husband had to work even harder than before having to pay off the many debts. He even had to work evenings and nights. Maupassant gave his reader the right punishment for Mme Loisel. She now was old, lost her beauty and became even more poor. This was a just punishment because she should have been appreciative of what she had. Even though she wanââ¬â¢t rich she at least lived comfortably. She now lost her beauty trying to be someone she wasnââ¬â¢t and now she lives with even less luxury than before. Maupassant wanted to show his reader that you must be grateful for what you have, and donââ¬â¢t look for things that is not of you nature. Mme Loisel didnââ¬â¢t live luxury so she shouldnââ¬â¢t have looked for luxury.

Poems-in the Shadow of Signal Hill Essay
In the Shadow of Signal Hill Signal Hill is a strikingly shaped hill or small peak overlooking the harbour of Cape Town. It has been used as a lookout post since the early days of the Cape colony. From it, the viewer can see Robben Island, the bare scar where the suburb of District Si stood before its occupants were evicted and its buildings demolished and Langa, a black township on the outskirts of suburban Cape Town. The overall significance of the title of the poem is that ââ¬Å"Signal Hillâ⬠represents the higher, white authority or white government of the Apartheid era. The fact that it is a hill implies how the white government saw themselves as the superior party, the party that was raised above the nation they control. The part ââ¬Å"in the shadowâ⬠of Signal Hill represents the black people who suffered under the Apartheid regime. They were the people who had to live in the shadows of the white government. The government overshadowed their whole lives and basically made their choices for them. The word ââ¬Å"shadowâ⬠also bears a connotation of fear in general. When one looks at childrenââ¬â¢s books, one will notice that the antagonist in the stories would be a ââ¬Å"shadowy figureâ⬠. Therefore the ââ¬Å"Shadow of Signal Hillâ⬠suggests the white government is the antagonist in terms of them being wrong in what they are doing ââ¬â which is initiating Apartheid in South Africa. 1. in the howling wind 2. by the murky waters 3. of the sea a cold, unpleasant atmosphere is created. The coloured people are angry and will take this anger and fight for their freedom. . . .: the ellipse is used effectively instead of a full stop. A full stop would end the poem. But the ellipse signals that the poem is not finished yet. It also resembles time passing. The poem has no punctuation marks or capital letters. This adds to the protest of the speaker. By ignoring common English grammar rules he strengthens the idea of protesting. The layout of the poem represents the waves of the ocean and the ebb and flow. The different lengths in sentences mimic the sea crashing onto the shore (represented by the longer sentences) and the retreating of the sea (represented by the short sentences. No punctuation marks means no stopping or pausing when one reads the poem. This also represents the image of the sea; the sea never stops moving, its waves will continuously crash on the shore, move back and repeat the process. Therefore by removing punctuation the poet effectively creates movement in the poem. Another reason for the lack of punctuation is to stress that there is no stopping slavery and discrimination.
