In â€Å"Shooting an Elephant,† Orwell retold an occasion where he was struggling to come to a final decision of whether to shoot the elephant or not. With his final decision, the elephant finally lay dying in front of thousands of people. He said that he was forced to shoot it because the Burmese people were expecting him to do that. In addition, he also explained that he had to do it â€Å"to avoid looking like a fool† in front of the crowd (14). At first glance, one would think that it makes sense for him to kill the elephant to save his face, but that was not the case. He effectively uses this incident to demonstrate the â€Å"real nature of imperialism† (3), whereas the elephant represents the British Empire. Orwell was ambivalent about†¦show more content†¦Upon seeing the rifle, a huge crowd started to follow him. He had no intention to kill the elephant. However, the crowd was expecting him to shoot it. They did not want to kill it because it had destroyed the bazaar, but rather to enjoy the fun and to get the elephant meat. The crowd’s expectation leaves Orwell no choice but to shoot the elephant. He points out that he had to shoot it to â€Å"impress the ‘natives’† (7). If he had not done it, the crowd would have laugh at him, and it would hurt his pride as a white man living in the East. In the end, he decided to trigger the gun and shot the elephant. The elephant, in this case, represent imperialism. Orwell, being in the middle of imperialism and the Burmese people, did not want to destroy imperialism in the first place even though he does not like the way it treated the innocent Burmese people. However, seeing the elephant destroying Burmese’s homes and lives, he finally realized what imperialism had done to the people of Burma. The Indian man who died represent the fact that Burmese people are weak against the British; they are poor and have neither strength nor â€Å"the gut to raise a riot† (1) against imperialism regardless of how much they hated it. Of Mice And Men John Steinbeck John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. He was raised in a fertile agricultural valley about twenty miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would become the setting for some of his novels and short stories. In 1919 he attended Stanford University, where he took literature and writing classes. In 1925 he left the university. He did not attain a degree before his departure. For the next five years of Steinbeck's life, he worked as a laborer and a journalist in New York City. Then he worked as a caretaker for an estate in Lake Tahoe. During these five years, he was also working on his first novel, Cup of Gold. He then got married and moved to Pacific Groove where he published his next two books, The Pastures of Heaven and To a God Unknown. He also worked on some of his famous short stories. In the book, George puts his life on the line several times in order to save his companion, Lennie. When Lennie gets himself into trouble, is always right behind to ?save ?im.? Even when George is forced to end Lennie's life, he understands that he ?hadda? in order to save Lennie's soul. There is no step too large for a ?true? friend to take for another friend. United States Declaration of Independence Essay John Locke was born on August 29th, 1632 in Somerset, England. He first studied medicine at Oxford University, and then later became a highly influential British philosopher. His ideas and literary works largely influenced people and governments during both his time, and ours. In his major works, Locke wrote down his ideas on topics such as political philosophy, education, and epistemology. In John Locke’s works on the topic of political philosophy, he introduced his ideas on the subjects of natural rights and the social contract. Locke’s ideas on these subjects have been largely influential in the development of the foundation of modern government. One of John Lockes most influential ideas was the thought that everyone had specific natural rights. In his opinion, there are certain natural rights that every person is entitled to have. According to Locke, these include the rights to life, liberty, and property. He developed these ideas in his most renowned piece of literary work called Second Treatise Concerning Civil Government. In this document, Locke writes that people should give up some natural freedoms in order to cooperate with the common law, and in return, the government should protect them. Another main point Locke makes is that citizens in any given country have the right, and obligation, to replace their current government if the regime is abusing its powers. Locke writes Every man has a property in his own person. This nobody has a right to, but himself. Though Houng’s and Esquivel’s novels are set in Vietnam and Mexico respectively, they assert that family traditions are unjust and forbid family members to pursue their own dreams, ambitions, and desires as portrayed by the two teenage protagonists and their mothers, who are obligated to sacrifice their own lives for others. First, we'll take you through the Microsoft Office Button, he Quick Access Toolbar, Ribbons, Tabs and Groups – to familiarize you with these common features. Then we'll show you some of the unique Ribbons, Tabs and Groups of each application. If you have 2007 Office installed on your computer here are a couple of hints on how we'll proceed. To open an application, Double click quickly on the application icon (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. ) on the Windows desktop. Or, click the Start button, in the lower left corner of the screen, then click All Programs, move the cursor over Microsoft Office and select the application you desire.In this tutorial, when we indicate that you need to click a mouse button, it will mean to click the left mouse button – unless we indicate that you should click the right mouse button. So, always move the cursor over the â€Å"place† we indicate and â€Å"click left† unless we tell you otherwise. The Microsoft Office Button We'll use Microsoft Word 2007 for our initial illustrations of Ribbon, Tab and Group examples. Crooks is a very lonely and bitter man who has got a crooked back where a horse kicked him, (Hence his name) His eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity. His face was very lean and lined with deep black wrinkles. His lips were lighter than his face. Crooks is the stable Buck on the ranch, he usually keeps to himself out in the barn. Being black makes life for Crooks extremely strenuous, He lived in California as a child and has felt the pains of racism his entire life. Although he did play with other white boys as a child, society soon cast him aside. His name is the first sign that Crooks will be portrayed as an outsider, as Crooks is not a real name. This shows us that the other farm workers have given him this name as a nickname to give him an inferior status, and to cast him out of their group.In the 30s when the book was written black, Afro-Americans were seen as outcasts and lesses humans that whites. Steinbeck, who, when he wrote the book, lived in a very unsympathetic society, used the book to bring about his doubts, concerning the views of his piers. The society in which Steinbeck lived was such that nigros were treated as animals and little more, he tries to portray this in the way that Crooks is treated in the novel, Stable Buck-ooh, Sta-able buck! and then: Where the hell is that god-damn nigger?This effectively shows how Steinbeck attempts to display how his society treats those that I see as being inferior to them as they would do animals. This is a method used by Steinbeck to isolate Crooks from the other workers. As is the way in witch he is given a different job than George and Lennie, as a disabled worker he can only complete menial tasks such as looking after the horses, degrading his usefulness and thus pushing him away even further.Although Jane Eyre is as much an outsider in her society as Crooks is in his, they are in completely different circumstances, but as with of mice and Men Jane Eyre is treated as an inferior person, but for different reasons.
